The Protect Seals Network to stop Canada's annual seal hunt, the largest and most brutal slaughter of marine mammals on the planet.

INTERNATIONAL CAMPAIGN
AGAINST SEAL HUNT IN CANADA
THE PROTECT SEALS NETWORK
Active Campaign
| |
Target: the yearly commercial seal hunt on the ice floes off Canada's East Coast: the Gulf of St. Lawrence (west of Newfoundland and east of the Magdalen Islands) and the "Front" (northeast of Newfoundland).
Promoter: Government of Canada.
| Activity: an off-season activity conducted by fishermen from Canada's East Coast who kill thousands of seals (mainly harp seal pups) with wooden clubs, hakapiks (large ice-pick-like clubs) and guns, for fur trade. |
| |
(False) Arguments: seals are jeopardizing the Canadian cod fishery, and seal hunt is economically important, seals are overpopulated. |
| For these myths, million seal pups have been killed in the last five years. |
| |
| Campaign: several international NGOs have been working against these brutal slaughter since the 1950s, when the Canadian government allowed to club and shoot harp seals in a way that the population was reduced by as much as two-thirds in about fifteen years. Last Seal Hunt Plan (2003-2006) allowed to kill a million more. |
| |
The Protect Seals Network is a joint effort
to bring this shame to an end.
The PSN was founded by Fund for Animals, International Fund for Animal Welfare, International Wildlife Coalition, Ocean Futures Society and The Humane Society of the United States. Today more than 40 organizations, representing tens of million of individuals worlwide, join the PSN.
In Spain, Altarriba Foundation.

Relevant Facts:
- In 2006, 98 percent of the harp seals killed were pups under just three months of age.
- Wounded seals are often left to suffer in agony.
- Seals are killed primarily for their fur, which is used to produce fashion garments and other items.
- In 2001 an independent team of veterinarians found that in 42 percent of the cases they studied, the seals had likely been skinned alive while conscious. |
- Revenues from the hunt account for less than 1 percent of the province's economy. |
| - Canada's commercial seal hunt is subsidized directly by the Canadian government and indirectly by the Norwegian government. |
| |
Our Contribution:
As the only Spanish-speaking NGO, our major concern is to spread the PSN message and boicott throughout the Spanish-speaking communities. In this sense we:
- Offer a wide information in Spanish through our website
- Are yearly interviewd by Spanish-speaking radio stations in USA and other countries
- Get a wide broadcast in Spanish media
- Organize demonstrations in Spain
