Altarriba Foundation, as a very important part of its work, takes part in several campaigns for animal welfare. Some of them are directly started and devolep by us, but we also join and support other ones.
DIRECT RESCUE & HELPING ACTIONS
We say how things could be done, but do ourselves too: our actions speak as loud as our words. Altarriba Foundation has never killed. Since our very first day, a "0-Killing" policy has been always strictly developed, both in our shelters and the city dog-pounds we have managed or still manage. We have always maintained that killing is not a need for a balanced population in a shelter or dog-pound, and that taking it into practice is a simple question of will and resources.
It means we rescue real animals who suffer a real pain in the real world, and help them to recover their lives. We offer them not only vet care (with specialist and surgery if needed), but also check for psychological after-effects and assist them. We do our best to recover animals even from dog-fighting, hanged by hunters (galguero), or "just" ill-treated at home or abandoned in a motorway.
We manage to bring them back to a normal animal-life, and try to show the way a normal-human acts, with no strikes or hard punishments. Animals are so good-natured that we usually success. It means that new families (carefully checked before) can later offer them a new chance to live as pets, closing their suffering and fear on.
But sometimes, the animals are so special that Altarriba Foundation itself adopt them, and take to live to a Sanctuary. Very old ones, blind, seriously ill or severely abused dogs, cats or horses, get a new life at liberty, in a home shared with other animals, with no cages.
Moreover, one of our Departmens, "The Other Citizen", specifically manages emergencies with animals in the city: a cat falls from a window, the tow truck push a vehicle with a dog inside, animals abandoned to starve into an empty flat or pet-shop, ...
A hard work focused on education and legal status has to be done to end animal abuses. A child usually sympathize with animals, but later the environment can change this -and it changes in fact, at least to make him believe that caring for animals is just a foolishness or even a lack of solidarity with human beings. Of course, some people are also moved from sympathy to cruelty.
For these reasons, we develop programmes to increase public awareness of animal rights as it will make politicians take it seriously; moreover, we develop actions to make politicians move that way.
