A national petition started by Altarriba Foundation to ban canadian seal products in Spain, with the support of the HSUS |

|
On Friday, April 27th 2007, Altarriba Foundation has started a national petition to ban seal products in Spain. The campaign has been coordinated with a proposal presented by socialist deputy Francisco Garrido (Los Verdes - Socialist Group), which was already rejected last year by the Socialist Party.
The petition is addressed to Diego L. Garrido, the Socialist Group spokesperson, who has to accept the proposal to be taken to the Environment Comission of the Spanish Parliament. A copy of the supporting mails is addressed to Spanish Ministries of Environment and State Department. In the first our, more than 100 supporting signatures had been received.
The proposal presented by deputy Francisco Garrido, included in the mail asks the Spanish Government to:
|
|
1. Support, at any international level, a ban for seal hunt
2. Put pressure on Canadian government to stop seal hunt
3. Ban in Spain the trade in any product from slaughtered Canadian seals
4. Impel an European ban for these products
5. Impel the EU to put pressure on Canadian government to stop seal hunt
6. Impel the EU to an international support to ban seal hunt

The HSUS supports this campaign: "By ending its trade in seal products, Spain can lead the way in stopping the brutal slaughter of baby seals for their fur. I've observed the commercial seal hunt in Canada for nine years, and it involves a level of cruelty no compassionate European could ever accept if they could see it for themselves. Right now, Spain has the power to close a small but consistent market for seal products, and send a clear message to the Canadian government that Europe wants no part of this cruel and needless slaughter."
