Alsace and Muhungu
From a practical point of view, Altarriba Foundation has assumed a responsability for an 8th shelter, this time in the Democratic Republic of Congo (Africa), to help the refurbishment and operations of the only place in that country to keep confiscated animals, mainly chimps and gorillas. The sanctuary is directed by primatologist Carmen Vidal.

THE ANIMALS
| |
Most of these animals have been rescued from poachers. Some of them are orphans found in the forest by the partial body of their mothers.

This sanctuary helps African wild animals. Today, 28 chimps, 4 gorillas and 20 primates are there sheltered, waiting to be reitegrated to wild, according to a research program, in National Park Kahuzi-Biéga.

THE PLACE
| |
The first part of this project in Lwiro Sanctuary will cover the refurbishment of its basic and spoiled current facilities, so the animals, while recovering, can stay in an adequate and fitting place.

THE HUMANE COLABORATION
| |
This project is a part of a wider one involving assistance to local tribes (health, education, etc.) of Bantu and Pygmies, as well as a more effective protection of the Kahuzi-Biéga Park itself. Kahuzi-Biéga Park's surface area is 600.000 hectares, located in the East of Democratic Republic of Congo.
A whole world and a challenge that Altarriba Foundation, committed itself to animal protection, will share with COOPERA and local POLE-POLE (POPOF), as well as with other NGOs working for both human and animal assistance.
